Planning a Madagascar vacation from the US

Flights and journey times from both coasts, jet lag, the visa for US passports, the State Department advisory, evacuation insurance, costs in dollars, and a US package against booking a local operator direct. Checked on 17 October 2026.

There are no direct flights from the US to Madagascar. You change at least once, usually in Nairobi, Addis Ababa or Paris, and from the East Coast the quickest connections take about 19 to 23 hours. From the West Coast it's about a day or more. US citizens need a tourist visa. The eVisa portal lists $35 to $47 online, while arrival charges need confirmation. The State Department rates Madagascar Level 2, "exercise increased caution". Give it two weeks on the ground if you can, plus a day at each end for the flights.

We're a small, Malagasy-owned operator in Antananarivo. Our private trips are priced per adult in euros, and the ECB reference rate on 16 October 2026 was about $1.13 to the euro, before bank charges.

Flights from the US: where you change, and how long it takes

Compare Kenya Airways through Nairobi, Ethiopian through Addis Ababa and Air France through Paris. From the East Coast, allow roughly 19 to 23 hours for a shorter connection, and from the West Coast a day or more. The operating schedule and layover decide the real journey time.

As an October 2026 fare-search snapshot, New York economy returns were about $1,200 to $2,200. Price your own dates before fixing the route. Compare mileage options too, since our prices leave out the international flight.

Before paying, have the full journey checked for health entry rules, including any safari or stopover. Madagascar's yellow fever certificate rule includes some airport transits over 12 hours, and its Ebola measures can affect recent travel through an affected country. Our flights guide has the gateways and arrival-day planning.

Jet lag and the time difference

Madagascar keeps East Africa Time (UTC+3) all year. That's 7 hours ahead of New York while the US is on daylight time and 8 in the US winter, and 10 or 11 hours ahead of Los Angeles.

Allow time to rest after the journey rather than treating the arrival day as a full sightseeing day.

Madagascar's days start early anyway: park visits often start early, and our Andasibe visit looks for the indri in the morning. A dawn start straight after a 20-hour journey is another matter, so we'd always plan a night's sleep in Antananarivo first. On the Classic South, the early start for the indri is day 2.

Visa, passport and customs for US citizens

Buy the tourist visa on the official eVisa site or at the counter when you land, after checking the fee. The portal lists $35, $41 and $47 online in October 2026, but official advice differs on short arrival stays. The State Department asks for a passport valid for six months after you arrive, with three blank pages. The visa runs from the day you land, so with a night either side, the Classic South means 13 days in the country at least, and we'd pay the extra $6 for 30. Our visa guide has the steps, and the look-alike sites that charge more.

Check customs and medicine rules before packing. Carry prescriptions in their original packaging and ask the relevant authorities about anything whose legal status differs abroad.

What the State Department says (October 2026)

Madagascar has been at Level 2, "Exercise increased caution", since early December 2025, for crime, unrest and health. Violent crime happens "particularly after dark, in remote areas, and along major national roads in the south and western areas", the advisory says. Six areas are at Level 3, "Reconsider travel", among them the Menabe region south of Morondava and the RN34 between Miandrivazo and Malaimbandy. Read the advisory in full before you book.

In practice: don't drive after dark, and keep a hand on your phone and bag in Antananarivo. Plan the driving for daylight and leave room for a slower road day. Sign up for STEP so the embassy in Antananarivo can reach you. Is Madagascar safe? adds what the UK, Canada and France say.

Travel insurance: get the evacuation cover

The State Department says serious medical emergencies in Madagascar require medical evacuation, and strongly recommends insurance that covers it. Check your own health plan: don't assume it covers treatment abroad or medical evacuation. Hospitals here usually want cash or proof of insurance before treating you, and complex cases are flown to Réunion, Mauritius or South Africa.

Look for:

  • Medical evacuation by air, with any existing conditions declared.
  • Cancellation and interruption, including extra nights if a cyclone or a cancelled flight holds you up. Buy it when you book: with many insurers, a storm that already has a name counts as foreseeable.
  • Supplier default. Many US policies cover a tour operator that goes out of business, often only if you buy within a few weeks of your first payment.

Compare cover and exclusions as well as the premium, especially for remote travel and pre-existing conditions.

What a Madagascar vacation costs in dollars

Our trip prices include your own vehicle and English-speaking driver-guide, accommodation with breakfast, and park fees and local guides. The 10-day Eastern trip is from €1,620 per adult, or roughly 13 per cent more in dollars at the 16 October 2026 reference rate, before conversion fees. On top, per person, in October 2026:

  • The international flight. About $1,200 to $2,200 return in economy.
  • The visa. $35, $41 or $47.
  • A domestic flight, where a trip ends far from Antananarivo: 100 to 200 euros one way, about $110 to $225.
  • Meals, drinks and tips. Roughly 25 to 45 euros a day, or $30 to $50.
  • Hotel nights in Antananarivo either side of the trip, where it doesn't include them.

For two people from New York on the Classic South, that's roughly $1,800 to $3,200 a head on top of the trip price, before insurance. The trip cost guide goes line by line.

Dollars aren't much use once you're here. The State Department says they aren't widely accepted, banks and shops often refuse $100 bills, and cash machines mostly take Visa. Bring a Visa card, plus euros or clean $20 and $50 bills (money in Madagascar).

A US package or a local operator?

A package seller can put more of the arrangements into one booking. Check which company is your contracting party, who runs the trip in Madagascar, what happens if a supplier changes, and who answers while you're travelling. Compare the hotels and meals before comparing the headline price.

Some US tour operators are USTOA Active Members. Their assistance programme uses a $1 million security held for eligible claims against the member, sometimes shared by brands in the same group. That is an aggregate fund, not $1 million for each traveller, and it may not cover every loss. Verify the actual company's membership and terms rather than assuming every US seller participates.

Booking directly with us means planning with the team that arranges the Madagascar trip. The person who answers your first message checks in while you're here. You choose the dates and pace, and hotels can be moved up or down to suit the budget.

Before any payment, get the itinerary, final price and cancellation terms in writing. Ask what protection applies to the booking and check insurance for supplier failure. A company's location doesn't, by itself, tell you all the legal or payment rights you may have.

When to go, against the US calendar

May to October, the dry season, suits most trips. Against American holidays:

  • Summer vacation. Dry in the highlands and the west, with cold nights, and humpbacks off Sainte-Marie from July to September. July and August are the busiest months, so book early.
  • September to early November. Our pick if you're free: dry nearly everywhere, fewer people, and the best window for lemur babies. The Tsingy de Bemaraha closes when the rains arrive, usually in November.
  • Thanksgiving. The rains are starting and the west is closing, but Andasibe has year-round departures, subject to conditions and November gives Sainte-Marie its fewest rainy days. Ask us about the Eastern trip.
  • Christmas and spring break. Both fall in the rains and the cyclone season, which peaks from January to March, mostly on the east coast. Ask us before you book.

Our month-by-month guide has the rest.

How many days to give it

For a first trip, two weeks on the ground. Madagascar is slightly smaller than Texas, as the State Department puts it, and the roads are slow: the 140 km to Andasibe usually takes three to four hours. Land the day before the trip starts and fly home the day after it ends, never on the same day as a domestic flight. That makes the 11-day Classic South about 15 days door to door from the East Coast, and the Eastern trip, which starts with your arrival, about 12 or 13. With ten days in all, spend a week in one region, as our itinerary guide explains.

The Window of Isalo at sunset

A sample two weeks: the Classic South from the US

Our Classic South, from €1,730 per adult, as an American vacation:

  • Day 0. Land at Ivato and sleep in Antananarivo.
  • Days 1 and 2. Andasibe: chameleons at Peyrieras, lemurs at Vakona, a night walk, then Analamazaotra early next morning in search of the indri. Back to the capital.
  • Days 3 to 5. South on the RN7 to Antsirabe, the woodcarvers of Ambositra, and two nights at Ranomafana, home of the golden bamboo lemur.
  • Day 6. Antemoro paper in Ambalavao, and Anja's ring-tailed lemurs among their granite boulders.
  • Days 7 and 8. Isalo: sunset at the Window, then a full day of canyons and natural pools.
  • Days 9 and 10. Ifaty, with spiny forest behind the beach.
  • Day 11. Fly from Tulear to Antananarivo. The flight isn't in the price, and we can book it.
  • Day 12. Fly home.

The stretch from Fianarantsoa to Tulear, the part of the RN7 the advisories worry about most, is split over three days of daytime driving.

For three weeks there's the Ultimate Madagascar Adventure, from €3,070: the Tsiribihina River, the Tsingy, the baobabs and the west coast, then Isalo and Ranomafana. The UK Foreign Office advises seeking alternative routes on the Tsiribihina after armed robberies on boats, and the coast south of Morondava is a US Level 3 area, so ask us to reshape or split it.
