Madagascar itineraries for 1, 2 or 3 weeks

What fits between landing and flying home, how many days each private trip actually takes, and where arrival nights, connections and buffers belong.

Start with the calendar, not the number of parks. How many days do you have between landing in Madagascar and your international departure? That is different from the number of days on a tour. With seven calendar days, choose one area. Around two weeks gives more room for an 11-day route and its arrival and return arrangements. Three weeks still needs careful counting before joining regions.

Our eight private trips include your own vehicle and driver-guide. These are published tour lengths, not complete door-to-door holiday lengths; flights, extra nights and optional changes need pricing separately:

Why Madagascar takes longer than the map suggests

Road conditions and connections decide what fits. Use the following routes to count travel days, then confirm the driving plan close to departure. A map distance alone does not establish an arrival time:

  • Antananarivo to Andasibe. About 140 km east on the RN2. The 2-day tour gives the journey its own outbound and return days; confirm pickup and return timing if flights sit close to them.
  • Down the RN7. The Classic South uses seven days for the road section and park stops from Antananarivo to Ifaty, with the Ranomafana detour on the way. Its Andasibe visit, beach day and Tulear return flight sit outside those seven days. Our RN7 guide gives rough leg allowances rather than a fixed driving timetable.
  • Morondava to the Tsingy de Bemaraha. The 5-day West trip splits the outward journey with a Kirindy night and spends two days around Bekopaka before returning to Morondava. Keep those travel days in the plan and confirm current road and ferry conditions.
  • Antananarivo to Morondava. The 5-day West trip starts in Morondava, so reaching it from Antananarivo is a separate part of the calendar. Check available flights and allow the return after the tour ends at sunset.
  • Antananarivo to Diego Suarez. Both published northern itineraries use a flight. Confirm that connection and where its cost sits before counting the days available for the north.

So the rule of thumb is one region for every ten days or so, explored by road, with flights between regions. If you haven't picked a region yet, our guide to the best places to visit in Madagascar goes through each one.

Long drives also have to fit into daylight: the UK Foreign Office advises against driving at night, because vehicles often have no lights and few roads are lit. At the time of writing, the same advice says to travel with a recognised tour operator in the west between Besalampy and Morombe, a stretch that takes in Morondava, the Tsingy road and the coast south of the town, because of violent highway robbery, particularly at night. It says the same for the south between Ihosy, Tulear and Fort Dauphin. Our safety guide has the detail.

7 days in Madagascar: choose one region

The 2-day Andasibe trip returns to Antananarivo on its second afternoon. The 5-day West trip starts in Morondava and finishes there after sunset on its fifth day. Adding two and five gives seven tour days, but leaves out international arrival, the connection to Morondava and the return after the western trip. We would not describe that combination as a seven-day holiday.

One ten-calendar-day example is: day 1 arrive in Antananarivo; days 2 and 3 Andasibe; days 4 to 8 the west, if the Morondava flight fits the day 4 pickup; day 9 return to Antananarivo; day 10 international departure. That depends on actual connections and gives one capital night after the domestic return. If the flights do not align, allow more days or choose one area. Tsingy road and circuit access also need confirming for your dates.

For a fixed seven-day window, ask whether the west alone fits your arrival airport and actual flights, or discuss a shorter route in one area. Possible starting points for a revised quote include:

  • The east. Andasibe, then the Pangalanes Canal and the Palmarium, which is our eastern trip cut short before the beaches.
  • The north. Diego Suarez, Montagne d'Ambre, Ankarana and a couple of nights on Nosy Be, a trimmed version of the 11-day north trip.

The RN7 road section in our Classic South takes seven tour days from Antananarivo to Ifaty. Those seven days do not include international arrival, beach time or the flight back from Tulear. It is not a seven-calendar-day arrival-to-departure holiday.

10 days in Madagascar: one region, done properly

Two published routes run ten tour days. Check whether your ten days include international arrival and departure: the east uses day 1 for arrival and day 10 for the domestic return, while the West Adventure starts driving on day 1. Extra nights may be needed before or after either route:

  • The east, at the gentlest pace. Eastern Madagascar gives Andasibe two nights, then two at Ankanin'ny Nofy on the Pangalanes, where the night walk looks for the aye-aye. A boat takes you up the canal to Toamasina, and the last three nights are on Sainte Marie, where humpbacks gather from July to September (the first from June).
  • The west, by river. The West Adventure turns the long road west into part of the trip: two days' drive through the highlands to Miandrivazo, four days drifting down the Tsiribihina and camping on the bank, then the Grand Tsingy and Kirindy, with the baobabs at sunset and again at sunrise to finish. It runs from May to November. At the time of writing, the UK Foreign Office says armed criminals have boarded boats on the Tsiribihina and robbed passengers, and it advises seeking alternative routes. We can reshape the trip without the river, for example by flying to Morondava and joining the western route there, as the 5-day West trip does, and our safety guide has the current advice.

2 weeks in Madagascar: the RN7, the west by river or the north

These are routes to discuss for a 14-calendar-day window. Their published lengths do not leave every remaining day free for extra parks:

  • The RN7 south. The Classic South (11 days) starts with two days at Andasibe, then runs the RN7: Antsirabe, Ranomafana (home of the golden bamboo lemur), Anja's ring-tails on their granite boulders, a full day in Isalo and two nights at Ifaty. It ends with a flight from Tulear, which saves the 950 km back. The flight is extra. One 14-day example is arrival on day 1, the 11-day tour on days 2 to 12, a capital buffer day on day 13 and international departure on day 14. Adding Andringitra hiking needs a revised plan with approach time; it does not fit automatically into the spare days.
  • The west by river, with Andasibe first. Our two days at Andasibe, then the 10-day West Adventure. That is 12 tour days. In a 14-day calendar it leaves just two other days for arrival and departure, so the Morondava return connection and an overnight in the capital must fit before treating it as workable. The river portion also needs reviewing against current travel advice.
  • The north. Northern Madagascar (11 days, starting in Diego Suarez) takes in the Three Bays, Montagne d'Ambre, the Tsingy Rouge and a full day in Ankarana, then Lokobe and Nosy Iranja from Nosy Be. It runs from April to December. The Northern Madagascar Adventure (12 days from Antananarivo) changes the island days: snorkelling at Nosy Sakatia, then a day on Nosy Iranja. Confirm separately where any proposed whale-watching boat would operate; the sandbar visit alone does not establish that location. Domestic flights aren't in the price of either, and we can book them.

3 weeks in Madagascar: check the total days

The Ultimate Madagascar Adventure (20 days) is the long way round: Antsirabe, three days on the Tsiribihina, the Grand Tsingy, Kirindy and the baobabs, then remote coastal tracks south through Belo sur Mer, Morombe and Ambatomilo to Ifaty, and back up the RN7 through Isalo, Anja and Ranomafana. The published season is May to November, and remote coastal access needs checking for your dates. Review the river portion against the advice in the ten-day section before settling this route. For the full 20-day route, an arrival day before the morning start and international departure after a final capital night make a 22-calendar-day example. If you have only 21 days, ask which part to shorten rather than removing the buffer by default.

The other choice is a shortened combination. Classic South plus the 11-day north trip is 22 tour days, so trimming one day still leaves no extra day for arrival, repositioning or international departure in a 21-day calendar. Tell us your priority parks and we will discuss what to remove and how the flights fit. A shorter trip is a different itinerary with a new quote, not the same package squeezed into fewer days.

Combinations that waste days on the road

  • Andasibe as a rushed day trip. An outward and return drive compete with forest time. The 2-day trip includes an overnight and a morning park visit, so ask about that before trying to fit both road journeys around a flight.
  • Reaching Morondava without counting the transfer. The western tour starts there. Compare actual flight availability with the extra days and cost of reaching it by road.
  • The RN7 both ways. Drive down and fly back from Tulear.
  • A quick look at the Tsingy. The published 5-day route includes the outward journey via Kirindy, two days around Bekopaka and the return. A shorter version needs a new day plan; do not remove its travel days from the calendar.
  • Three regions in two weeks. Adding north, south and west introduces access and connection days as well as park time. Choose the places that matter most before buying flights between them.
  • The west without an access check. Rain can disrupt roads and park access. Check the actual Tsingy road and circuits for your dates rather than relying on a fixed reopening date or the label “dry season”.
  • A domestic flight on your last day. Schedules change often, so sleep in Antananarivo before the flight home.

Adding a beach

Several routes already include a coastal stay. Check those nights before adding another island and another connection:

  • Ifaty, after the RN7. It is north of Tulear, with spiny forest behind the beach and Vezo fishermen in outrigger canoes on the lagoon. The Classic South already gives it two nights; the airport transfer is part of day 11.
  • Sainte Marie, after the east. Beaches backed by palms, and humpbacks from July to September. It's on the wetter side of the island, and cyclones, possible from about November to April, hit the east coast hardest.
  • Nosy Be and Nosy Iranja, after the north. Both north trips give Nosy Be four nights. Adding Nosy Be to a different route needs a revised calendar and quote for flights, transfers and nights; it may mean shortening another part of the trip.
  • The remote west coast. Belo sur Mer and Ambatomilo, on the Ultimate.

Mixing coasts can add flights, transfers and travel days. Price the actual connections before adding Sainte-Marie after the RN7, and keep the return buffer in the calendar.

Check what day 1 means before you book flights

The eastern trip and the 12-day north trip include an arrival day in Antananarivo. Classic South and the Ultimate leave the capital on the morning of day 1, so plan to arrive before that day. The 5-day west trip starts in Morondava; the 11-day north trip is priced from Diego Suarez. At the other end, Classic South uses day 11 for the Tulear return flight, the 5-day west finishes after sunset in Morondava, and the 12-day north already includes a capital night after its domestic return. We recommend a night in Antananarivo before an international departure after a domestic connection. On the booking page, give your dates, traveller count and budget per person. Use “Anything else we should know?” for total calendar days, flight times, walking pace and the stops you would keep first. Say whether the budget includes flights; our cost guide separates land prices from the whole holiday.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in Madagascar?

Around two weeks gives room to discuss an 11-day route plus arrival and return arrangements. A week needs a tighter choice in one area. Count calendar days between landing and international departure, then place tour days, domestic connections and overnight buffers within them. A 20-day tour does not automatically fit a 21-day holiday.

Is one week in Madagascar enough?

It can work for a focused visit in one area, depending on arrival and departure times. The 2-day Andasibe and 5-day West trips add up to seven tour days but still need access and return arrangements. The example above uses ten calendar days when the flights align. For seven total days, send your flight times before deciding which route to keep.

Can you see the north and the south of Madagascar in two weeks?

We would start with one region for two weeks. Our full Classic South and 11-day north trip total 22 tour days, before adding any extra days the connections require. Even a 21-day holiday needs a shorter revised combination. Tell us the places that matter most, and we can discuss what to leave out.

Is it better to drive or fly between regions in Madagascar?

Our set trips use road travel within a route and flights for some access and return journeys. Compare an actual available connection with the extra days an overland transfer would need, including both costs. Allow an overnight in Antananarivo before an international departure after a domestic arrival, with more contingency where needed. Our guide to getting around Madagascar compares the options.

When should I go for each route?

Our published west itineraries list April or May to November and the north lists April to December. These are planning windows, not guarantees of road or circuit access. Confirm conditions for your exact dates, particularly at either end of a season. Andasibe is offered year-round. Use the month-by-month guide to choose priorities, then confirm the route and current travel advice before booking.

Can you change one of your set itineraries?

Yes. Our trips are starting points, not fixed departures: change the length, swap a park, add Nosy Be at the end or slow the pace down. Every trip is private, from two people, with your own vehicle and driver-guide, and you can plan it with us in English, French or Spanish. Send your dates, traveller count and budget per person through the booking page. Add total calendar days, walking pace and priority stops in the message. We usually reply within 24 hours with a written itinerary and a firm price for the agreed route.
