Andasibe National Park: indri, night walks and how to visit
The indri, how to arrange a guided night walk, Mantadia, Vakona and Peyrieras, rain and leeches, and how many days to give Andasibe.

Two days and one night from Antananarivo: Peyrieras on the way east, Vakona's habituated lemurs and a guided night walk, then an early morning looking for wild indri in Analamazaotra before the drive back.
Choose this route if you have one night for the rainforest and want a morning looking for indri. It includes Analamazaotra, rather than the separate Mantadia forest. For more time, compare the 10-day Eastern trip; for ring-tails as well as rainforest lemurs, compare the 11-day Classic South. In your request, tell us your dates, number of travellers and comfortable walking time.
Highlights of the tourLeave Antananarivo in the morning and drive east. At Peyrieras Reserve in Mandraka, we stop to look for chameleons, geckos and other small endemic species. Lunch is in Moramanga or Andasibe, depending on timing.
In the afternoon, visit Vakona Reserve, where the lemurs are habituated to people. This is a different setting from the wild forest visit the next morning.
The guided evening walk around Andasibe looks for nocturnal wildlife such as mouse lemurs and frogs. Ask us to confirm the reserve and authorised circuit for the night walk in your written itinerary.
Overnight: mid-range hotel in Andasibe (bed & breakfast)Start early in Analamazaotra National Park with a local park guide, looking for indri and other lemurs in the rainforest. Sightings depend on where the wild animals are that morning; none is guaranteed.
After the visit, have lunch in the village before the afternoon drive back to Antananarivo.
Send your travel month, number of travellers, flight times and walking preferences with your request. The written itinerary confirms the details before booking.
Analamazaotra is about 140 km east of Antananarivo, reached by the RN2. On day 1 we break the drive at Peyrieras Reserve and stop for lunch in Moramanga or Andasibe, depending on timing. Day 2 returns to Antananarivo after the morning forest visit and lunch. Send your arrival and onward flight times when you enquire so we can confirm how the trip fits your other plans.
One night gives you an afternoon at Vakona, a guided night walk and a morning looking for wild indri in Analamazaotra. It does not include the separate Mantadia forest, and no sighting is promised. If you want another forest morning, ask to extend. The 10-day Eastern trip spends two nights at Andasibe before the Pangalanes Canal and Île Sainte-Marie. The 11-day Classic South combines Andasibe with Ranomafana and Anja, where it looks for ring-tails.
This is a forest walking trip. Analamazaotra has circuits of different difficulty, and wet conditions can change the footing. Tell us how long you are comfortable walking and how you manage slopes so we can discuss the route before you book. Wear shoes with grip and bring a waterproof layer. Our Andasibe guide explains the trails and what to bring.
Analamazaotra is listed as accessible year-round by Madagascar National Parks, which recommends May to October for wildlife visits. There is no true dry season here, so bring a waterproof layer in any month. More frequent rain from November to April can affect the walking and travel plans. Send your dates so we can advise on the itinerary; the Andasibe guide has more on conditions.
In Analamazaotra, you look for wild lemurs in the forest with a park guide. Vakona is a private reserve with habituated lemurs accustomed to people. Neither visit guarantees a particular animal. Do not feed or touch lemurs. Ask us to confirm the reserve and authorised circuit for the evening walk in your itinerary. A night walk in the area does not automatically mean access inside the national park.
The starting price is €320 per adult, from two people. It includes your private vehicle, an English-speaking driver-guide, one night in a mid-range hotel on a bed and breakfast basis, park entrance fees and local guides. Lunches and dinners, drinks, tips and personal expenses are not included.
Tell us if you want a different hotel level. The final quote depends on group size, season and hotel choice, and is confirmed in writing before anything is booked. No payment is required to enquire.
