Avenue of the Baobabs: how to visit, and when
When to go, how to get to Morondava, what the rains change, and how to fit the Avenue in with Kirindy and the Tsingy.

A Kirindy night walk, sunset at the Avenue of the Baobabs and two activity days at Bemaraha: Grand Tsingy, then Manambolo and Petit Tsingy. Four nights are included before the return to Morondava on day 5. Tell us your dates, group and comfort with heights; ask for final-night, transfer and flight costs in writing.
We meet you at the airport or directly at your hotel in Morondava and begin our journey toward Kirindy Forest. Lunch is taken in Morondava or Kirindy, depending on your arrival time.
On the way we stop at the famous Avenue of the Baobabs to take photos and enjoy the scenery before continuing the drive.
In the early evening, before dinner, we go on a guided night walk in Kirindy. We may encounter nocturnal lemurs and, with some luck, the fossa, Madagascar's largest predator.
Overnight: Relais de KirindyIn the morning we visit Kirindy Reserve to search for sifakas, lemurs, birds and other wildlife. After the visit we begin the drive toward Bekopaka, crossing the river by ferry.
We stop for lunch in Belo-sur-Tsiribihina, then continue the drive to Bekopaka in the afternoon.
Overnight: Olympe Hotel (or similar)After an early breakfast we head to the Grand Tsingy to start the hike as early as possible and avoid the heat. This is the most spectacular part of the park, famous for its towering limestone formations that rise like stone cathedrals. The circuit combines forest trails, metal ladders, narrow passages, hanging bridges and panoramic viewpoints overlooking the Tsingy landscape. Along the way we look for lemurs, birds and unique dry-forest vegetation growing between the rocks.
The hike usually lasts between four and seven hours, depending on the route and your pace.
After the visit we return to the hotel for lunch and enjoy a relaxing afternoon to rest, swim, or simply recover from the hike.
Overnight: your hotel in BekopakaIn the morning we explore the Manambolo River by canoe, gliding through calm waters surrounded by impressive cliffs and a peaceful atmosphere. We observe birds and small wildlife, and learn about the daily life and traditions of the local communities along the river.
We then visit the nearby caves, where you can see stalactites, stalagmites and ancient tombs that form part of the region's cultural heritage.
In the afternoon we continue with a guided walk in the Petit Tsingy. The formations here are smaller but still impressive, with easier trails that offer a different perspective of the landscape before returning to the hotel.
Overnight: your hotel in BekopakaAfter an early breakfast, we drive back towards Morondava, stopping for lunch in Belo-sur-Tsiribihina and for a short visit to the Baobabs in Love along the way.
We reach the Avenue of the Baobabs for sunset, then drop you at your Morondava hotel. The four included nights are already spent at Kirindy and Bekopaka. Ask for the final Morondava night, any following-day airport transfer and your onward travel to be itemised in the written quote. Do not book a same-evening departure on the assumption that this return fits it.
The advertised route season is April to November, but that is not an opening calendar for Grand Tsingy. Rain, the road and ferry crossings affect access; individual circuits may open at different times. Confirm your exact dates and planned Grand Tsingy circuit before booking, especially near either end of the season.
Tell us if Grand Tsingy is the main reason for your trip. The Petit Tsingy and Manambolo offer different activities, so check which circuits can actually be included for your dates. Our Tsingy de Bemaraha guide explains access and walking choices.
The Grand Tsingy circuit combines forest trails, metal ladders, narrow passages and hanging bridges. Allow four to seven hours, depending on the circuit and your pace. You need to be comfortable with heights and climbing; tell us about walking limits, children’s ages and any concern about narrow spaces before choosing the route.
Day 3 starts after an early breakfast, with the afternoon free to rest. Day 4 has Manambolo and the Petit Tsingy, with easier trails. The exact circuit and access still need confirming for your dates.
Long and mostly unpaved. Only about the first 15 km of the roughly 200 km road from Morondava to Bekopaka are paved, and the route includes a river crossing by ferry. On the 5-day West trip the drive is split in two, with a night at Kirindy on the way out and lunch in Belo-sur-Tsiribihina in each direction.
In Morondava. We meet you at the airport or your hotel on day 1 and return you to your Morondava hotel after sunset at the Avenue of the Baobabs on day 5. The itinerary includes one night at Kirindy and three at Bekopaka, before that return.
Ask us to itemise the final Morondava night, the following transfer and any flights in the written quote. Send arrival and departure details, plus your total holiday days, before booking connections. A following-day airport transfer can be arranged; its price and timing need confirming.
The four included nights are one at the Relais de Kirindy after the forest night walk, then three at the Olympe Hotel or similar in Bekopaka. Breakfast is included. These are the nights before the day-5 return to Morondava.
That day ends at your Morondava hotel after sunset. Ask for that final hotel night and any onward transfer to be identified and priced in the quote; do not assume they are covered by the four-night description. Tell us if you need extra nights before or after the loop.
Compare park time before adding days. This route has two activity days at Bemaraha. The published 10-day West and 20-day Ultimate routes each show one full Grand Tsingy day; extra days add the river and other regions.
Before choosing Tsiribihina, read current UK travel advice, which advises alternative routes after armed robberies aboard boats. France Diplomatie discourages rainy-season river trips and recommends motorised barges with safety equipment in the dry season. Confirm the craft, equipment and operating arrangements in writing. This five-day route starts in Morondava and has no Tsiribihina descent.
From €810 per adult, from two people, with the price varying by group size. Included: private vehicle and English-speaking driver-guide, four nights with breakfast, park entrance fees and local guides, and the Manambolo canoe trip. Lunches, dinners, drinks, tips and personal expenses are excluded.
Ask for a written total covering your exact dates, group, final Morondava night, onward transfer and flight arrangements. Trip planning in French is available; the included driver-guide speaks English. Any other requested guiding language must be confirmed in writing.
