Northern Madagascar: Beaches, Tsingy & Wildlife
The Three Bays, Montagne d'Ambre, the red Tsingy and a full day in Ankarana's caves, then Lokobe and the sand of Nosy Iranja.

The second month of high season, a touch warmer than July. What August is like in each region, the whales and the lemur babies, the wind in the north, why everything books up, and which of our trips suit it. Checked on 17 October 2026.
August is part of Madagascar's cool, drier season and usually suits the west, south and north. Highland nights still need warm layers, the eastern coast can have rain, and humpbacks are in season off Sainte-Marie. It is a busy holiday month, so confirm flights and small lodges early.
Compared with July, August moves later into the cool season, and the month ring-tailed lemurs start having babies. The price is the crowd. Still choosing a month? See our July guide and the month-by-month guide.
Météo Madagascar describes May to October as the cool, drier season, with the eastern side still exposed to moist trade winds. August belongs to that pattern. A month label doesn't predict the weather on your particular crossing or forest morning.
The north is dry in August, but it's rarely still. Rough Guides describes a steady south-easterly, the varatraza, blowing into Diego's bay from May to October, and Madagascar's tourism office counts 95% of days as windy in the north from April to November. At Sakalava Bay, one of the Three Bays, it says the trade wind blows non-stop through the kitesurf season, May to October.
Good news if you kite or windsurf. If you don't, expect gusty beaches and choppy water, so take the calmest morning for a boat to the Emerald Sea lagoon. Bradt adds that the varatraza blows most days at Montagne d'Ambre, which can make the rainforest feel cold. Pack a windproof layer.
August also suits Ankarana. Its western side, from Andrafiabe village, is open only from July to November, according to Madagascar National Parks. More on the north in our Diego Suarez guide.
On our Eastern trip, whale watching off Sainte-Marie is an option from July to September, with the first whales from June. The channel is a calving ground, and a study of nearly 900 whale-watching trips found that mothers with calves become more common after the first month. August is a month we'd discuss for Sainte-Marie if whales are the point, allowing spare days for sea conditions. Bradt names mid-August to December among the island's best months for weather.
In the north, August overlaps the period studied by humpback researchers off Nosy Be. A 2018 survey off Nosy Be recorded them from 27 July to 13 October and suggests the area may be where calves are weaned. On the south-west coast, humpbacks occur seasonally, but confirm current departures rather than treating Ifaty as an established departure point.
Whales are wild, and nobody can promise you one. Madagascar's 2023 rules keep boats at least 100 m away, and swimming with whales isn't allowed. Our Sainte-Marie guide explains how the outings work.

Lemurs don't migrate, and our Lemur Safari page puts the best window at May to mid-November, when they're at their most active and visible. August adds babies:
Night walks are a little quieter: Bradt notes that dwarf lemurs, tenrecs and some reptiles are less active from June to September.

August falls within the Tsingy de Bemaraha's usual season. The road and Grand Tsingy are usually operating, subject to current conditions. If the Grand Tsingy is the point of your trip, June to mid-October is the window we'd aim for, and August is right in the middle of it. It's still about 200 km of 4x4 track to Bekopaka, and the UK Foreign Office advises using a recognised tour operator in the west because of highway robbery.
Confirm Bekopaka and Kirindy accommodation before treating a western route as fixed. A small lodge filling can change the order of a trip. At the Avenue of the Baobabs, sunset is crowded from July to September and sunrise is usually quieter. The bare trees give you the classic silhouettes, and Kew gives May to July for Grandidier's baobab flowers, so August visitors should plan around the trees rather than expect flowers.
August falls in the middle of the season for famadihana, the "turning of the bones", when Merina and Betsileo families take their ancestors' remains from the family tomb and rewrap them in new shrouds. The family and local custom decide the date. It's a private family occasion with no timetable, so you'd go only if a family invites you. An invitation and permission for photographs are essential.
Bradt's advice is to avoid July and August if crowds bother you. August is when Europe is on holiday all month: Exact school dates vary by country, area and year, so check the calendar that applies to your family. Rough Guides says international fares are much higher in late July and August, and accommodation can cost more, with places of every kind booking out months ahead.
So book in this order:
Then leave a spare day on the coast, because one rough morning can cost you a whale outing. Our prices are indicative and season moves the final quote, which we confirm in writing, before anything is booked.
All four are private, with your own vehicle and driver-guide, and can be reshaped.
Send your dates through the booking form or on WhatsApp, and we'll tell you what's still open in August. A real person in Antananarivo replies, usually within 24 hours.

Yes, for most trips. It's the dry season in the highlands, the west, the south and the north, the Tsingy de Bemaraha is open, and it's whale season off Île Sainte-Marie. The catches are cold highland nights, a strong wind in the far north and the crowds: August is one of the two busiest months, so book early.
August is in the cool, drier season. Highland nights can feel cold, the western routes are usually drier, and eastern rainforest still needs rain protection. Wind can affect the bays around Diego Suarez. Ask about the actual weather and sea conditions before a boat departure.
Yes, in season, though no one can promise a sighting. Humpbacks are off Île Sainte-Marie from July to September, and mothers with calves become more common after the first month, which makes August a good time to go. In the north they arrive from late July, and humpbacks also occur seasonally off the south-west coast. Ask about current departures before planning around a particular beach. Boats must keep at least 100 m away, and swimming with whales isn't allowed.
Yes. July and August are the busiest months, with Europe on its summer holidays. Popular small lodges can fill early and prices depend on availability. Book flights and hotels early.
Usually, yes. A steady south-easterly, the varatraza, blows into the bay from May to October, and the tourism office counts 95% of days as windy in the north from April to November. Good for kitesurfing at Sakalava Bay, gusty for lying on the beach. Bring a windproof layer, including for Montagne d'Ambre.
Private trips with your own vehicle and driver-guide. Every one can be reshaped around your dates.
